Sanibel is paradise for both birds and birders.  Over 300 species of the former can be found here.  And countless numbers of the latter come from all over the world to see them.

Some birds, like herons, egrets and ospreys, are year-round residents; others are seasonal migrants.  White pelicans, for instance, flock to "Ding" Darling NWR in winter, the dry season, when the water level in the bay drops low enough to expose the sand bars.  But there are birds here in every season.
